City Awards Contract For Road Improvement Plan

For Immediate Release – February 19, 2020

Hermantown Awards Contract for 2020 Road Improvement Plan

Hermantown, Minn. – Hermantown completed another step in its multi-year plan to perform key road improvements across the city Tuesday by awarding Ulland Brothers, Inc., the construction contract for the 2020 portion of the city’s Road Improvement Plan.

Focusing on five roads – Johnson, Portland, Alexander, Carlson, and a stretch of Hermantown Road between Stebner Road and Okerstrom Road – the construction contract is set for just above $2.23 million. Construction is slated to start as soon as the weather allows and completion is slated for the fall of 2020.

The process for Hermantown’s Road Improvement Plan has featured a series of information sessions and a great deal of public engagement leading up to Tuesday’s decision by the City Council to award the 2020 construction contract. Three different public information sessions were held in 2019, as well as multiple opportunities for public comments at City Council meetings, both for specific residents along these roads as well as the greater public as a whole. A portion of this project, as well as future roads within the Hermantown Road Improvement Plan, is being funded by individual property assessments.

“We have received positive public feedback throughout the process,” said John Mulder, Hermantown City Administrator. “We have heard clearly that this project is necessary, that impacted residents feel they have had their concerns heard and their questions answered, and that they understand why an assessment is necessary as a part of funding these improvements.”

The City will begin to work with residents on the roads slated for improvement in 2021 – Lavaque Junction, Lightning Drive, Thunderchief Lane, and sections of Getchell Road and Old Hwy 2 – beginning in April of 2020.
