Hermantown Police Hiring Full-Time Police Officer

The Hermantown Police Department is accepting applications to fill (1) immediate and (1) anticipated opening for full-time police officers in the Fall of 2020.

We are seeking applications from both Lateral Entry and Entry Level Candidates. To be eligible for Lateral Entry consideration, candidates must have a minimum of 1 year of sworn Law Enforcement Experience with a State, County or Local jurisdiction. All candidates must be P.O.S.T. licensed or eligible to be licensed by the state of Minnesota by the date of November 15, 2020.

A resume and cover letter must be included with the application. All materials must be received or postmarked no later than August 7, 2020, at 1630 hours. Completed applications with all required materials can be submitted via mail or dropped off at the Hermantown Police Department (5111 Maple Grove Road, Hermantown, MN 55811) or they can be e-mailed to cops@hermantownmn.com

The Hermantown Police Department is a very active department that continues to grow and change with the growth of the community. There are currently 15 full-time officers. The department offers prospective candidates a wide variety of rewarding assignments and specialized positions. Specialized duties (Detective, SRO and K-9) are assigned to Patrol Officers on a rotational basis, offering employees many opportunities throughout their career.

Our Patrol squads are very well equipped. Each AWD Ford Explorer SUV or Chevrolet Tahoe has a mobile computer with wireless internet, video equipment, radar unit, P.B.T., tint meter, spike strips, AED, shotgun and a 40mm Less Lethal Launcher. Full-time Officers are provided with a Glock Model 17 9mm handgun, M4 Rifle, cell phone, digital camera and all initial duty gear, soft body armor, and uniforms.

Compensation and Benefits

  •  2020 Starting Patrol Officer (Entry Level) hourly wage: $28.10/hour (Step levels for Lateral Entry hires are negotiated at the time of final job offers)
  • Current top Patrol Officer wage: $34.55/hour, plus benefits (January 2019-2021 contract)
  • Shift Differential Pay
  • Out-of-Class Pay
  • Yearly uniform allowance of $800.
  • 12 hour shifts, generally working 5 days on, 5 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off (every other weekend off with a 5 day stretch)

Information on the City of Hermantown

The City of Hermantown is a thriving and growing community. The estimated population is 9,726 with growth of over 30% since 2000. With a rural feel, the city has 34.3 square miles. Hermantown has a rural feel despite being situated adjacent to the City of Duluth. As a gateway to the Arrowhead Region and proximity to Lake Superior, many inland lakes, many different hiking/biking trails and other outdoor activities there is plenty of recreational activities. The Hermantown School District is an excellent choice and recently added a new High School and additions on to the Elementary and Middle Schools.
