The Hermantown Volunteer Fire Department has room for 40 active and probationary members within the department’s charter. Despite the training, meetings and high number of calls, membership in the Hermantown Volunteer Fire Department can be a very rewarding experience. Some of the advantages of membership include receiving a pension as a vested member, meeting new people, establishing roots in Hermantown, access to a fitness center, and the satisfaction of helping to save lives and property in our community. All members must maintain reasonable response to emergency calls to the department, as defined under departmental policies.

All men and women are encouraged to apply. Individuals interested in applying to become a member of the Hermantown Volunteer Fire Department must meet the following requirements:

  • Be more than eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Be a resident of Hermantown.
  • Be in good physical and mental health and eligible to perform the duties responsible of the position.
  • Hold a valid Minnesota driver’s license.

Candidates may apply to become a member by completing the following steps:

  • Complete the Hermantown Volunteer Fire Department Application and Criminal Background Check Authorization Form. To obtain these forms call (218) 729-3669, email hermantownfire@hermantownmn.com, or download the forms in PDF format below.
  • Mail or drop off both documents to the Hermantown Volunteer Fire Department, 5111 Maple Grove Road, Hermantown, MN  55811.

Upon approval of the application and background check, an interview with the Department Chiefs will be scheduled. Candidates successfully passing the interview will be given 60 days to schedule and complete a physical through Work Right at the Duluth Clinic. After the results of the physical have been received and approved, a department agility test will be given. When these steps have been successfully completed, the Fire Chief will notify the candidate of his or her approval to begin the probationary process.

Probationary fire fighters will become active members after serving not less than one year and no more than two years and completing the following probationary requirements:

  • Successful completion of a Firefighter I course or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a First Responder (at minimum) course qualified by the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the minimum training requirements established in departmental policies.
  • Successful driving and operation tests of all apparatus and equipment owned by the department.
